CIRCUMSTANCES OF BIRTH/CULTURAL HERITAGE

Born in a borderland in northwestern China, Chimi Xia was the only daughter of the Xia clan, a powerful family that controls an elite group of mercenaries. The founder of the Xia clan, Tianming Xia, was a general under the last dynasty, the Sui dynasty, but after the usurp that established the Tang dynasty, General Xia was ousted, and the entire clan was exiled to the northwestern borderland. Despite the cruel turn of fate, General Xia formed friendly relationships with the nearby Turkic and Tibetan tribes and began to recruit mercenaries. In the height of conflicts between the Second Turkic Khaganate and China, the Xia clan rose to prominence by providing mercenaries to fight battles on contested land and frontier protectorates. By the year 731, the Xia clan had monopolized the mercenary business in northwestern China, but the clan was not without scandal. Chimi Xia’s father only became the leader after his brother was ousted after marrying a Turkic woman.

EARLY LIFE

Chimi Xia was the youngest and only daughter of the leader of the Xia clan. She had three brothers. The eldest brother showed martial arts talent at a very young age. Many had claimed him to be the “reincarnation of the Tianming Xia”. It was the prime of the Xia clan. Many in the martial world believed that he would help this already renowned family reach a new height. As the daughter, her parents taught her simple fighting skills, but they were more focused on raising her to be a desirable wife. In fact, at age four, her hand in marriage was promised to the successor of a southern security agency, so they could form an alliance. She was jealous of her brothers and would always hide behind the training room to watch them train. She was fascinated by sabres and swords. Misfortune struck when she was six. Her disgraced uncle ambushed the clan with the help of Turkic soldiers and a few disgruntled mercenaries. A massacre ensued. Her father, mother and all three of her brothers were killed in the massacre. She was also severely injured, leaving her with one leg only. Her uncle thought that she was just a little girl and took pity on her. He took her in as his stepdaughter, since he didn't have a daughter, and raised her. The wedding arrangement was nullified after the change of leadership caused a brouhaha. The Xia clan no longer worked with the Chinese army, but instead began to supply to the Turkic army. (edited)

Living with a disability hardened Chimi Xia, she was no longer a carefree girl who dreamed of a loving marriage. She had to grow up quickly. While her Turkic stepmother often neglected her, she began training with one of the elders, who remained loyal to her father. Because of her physical disability, she had to work twice as hard, but she vowed revenge after watching her gentle mother take her last breath through her teary eyes. She had to walk with a cane, but that cane became a perfect carrier for shurikens. When she turned fourteen, the second Turkic Khaganate was decimated by an alliance between the Uyghurs, Basmyls, and the Chinese. The political turmoil weakened the Xia clan and the current leader. Without the backing of a powerful empire and under the scrutiny of the Chinese, many mercenaries in the Xia clan were left in disarray. Years of brutal leadership and unfair treatment also left many mercenaries disgruntled. During this time of unrest, Chimi Xia and her mentor drafted a plan. With the promise of a more profitable future, Chimi Xia convinced mercenaries to revolt against her uncle. In an almost similar act of revenge as her uncle's, Chimi Xia captured and murdered her uncle, her stepmother, and their children. She then declared herself as the new leader of the Xia clan. The Chinese army was glad to see the return of the original Xia clan without foreign influence, the Xia clan rose to prominence once again. (edited)

INCITING ADVENTURING INCIDENT

When Chimi was 28, the Anshi Rebellion, one of the deadliest wars in Chinese history began raging upstream of the Yellow River. The Uyghurs’ support had benefited the Chinese greatly. To solidify their alliance, the Chinese emperor sent Qing, the daughter of a Chinese loyalist Turkic general, to marry the Uyghur Qaghan in the year 759. This is a political maneuver often known as Heqin. During a negotiation with the Uyghurs, Chimi Xia met Qing, who accompanied the Qaghan. She was mesmerized by her beauty and gentle nature, but knowing Qing was a married woman, Chimi had to keep their relationship a secret. In the year 761, however, the Qaghan passed away. Feeling equally strongly for Chimi, Qing wrote to the Chinese emperor to ask to come back to China. As an important figure who communicated frequently with the Chinese court, Chimi asked to marry Qing once she returned to China. The war was at its height. Afraid of losing a powerful alliance, the emperor agreed. Chimi was ecstatic and led a convoy to welcome her new bride at the border of Uyghur and China. She waited until nightfall to realize that it was a ruse. While she was away, her clan was surrounded by the Chinese army, and a usurp had taken place to take control of her mercenary. She narrowly escaped capture by crossing over to Uyghur land. Devasted and lost, she trekked through difficult terrain. It wasn't long before she learned that Qing was forced to marry the Qaghan's son, who was due to be the new Qaghan. The Chinese court fabricated that Chimi was executed after being found to have betrayed China. Luckily, she found a group of outcasts who were heading down to the heart of the Uyghur Khaganate. Can she conquer all and be reunited with the love of her life?
